Description | We are a Kenya-based independent, non-partisan, non-ethnic network launched in 2004. Daughters of Mumbi and its project, Solidarity Africa Network, seek to add value to the work and struggles of social movements in African through local organizing, regional capacity-building, and policy advocacy. Our work is centered in the fight for justice, dignity, peace, and sustainability for all. We are inspired by four meanings of Mumbi in the Gíkúyú language and culture: Creator – connecting to creation – the environment – which must "include human beings as a species worth saving"; Clan – pledging to build a united community with shared life-affirming values; First Mother – honoring women's role in anchoring family and community and our respective cultural roots; Potter – recognizing dignity in the work of our hands, especially women's work and creativity. |
