DescriptionA JOINT MEDIA STRATEGY TO DERAIL WTO, CANCUN 2003 ...................................................................................................................................................... From September 10 to 14, 2003, will take place in Cancún, Mexico, one of the most important meeting of the world's economic powerholders: the 5th Ministerial of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). ...................................................................................................................................................... The Social Movements of the world are mobilizing and organizing various actions in order to impose their social agenda. As this was the case in similar Summits and Counter-Summits, one terrain of struggle in Cancun for organisations to derail the WTO will be towards medias and public opinion, giving therefore its whole meaning to the right of expression and the right of all to information. ...................................................................................................................................................... The "Medias and Press" International Group of Action, an open coordination space which operates at different levels (Cancún, Mexico, International), was formally created during the Hemispheric and Global Assembly against the Free Trade Area of the Americas FTAA and the World Trade Organization WTO, held in Mexico City on May 11-12, 2003. It operationalizes an integrated strategy that seeks to "Build a communication process in order to contribute to derail WTO and FTAA and to give visibility to the peoples' alternative proposals". ...................................................................................................................................................... Among many activities, the Group channels many of its efforts to pull together in Cancún the Communications and Medias Alternative Center, (CACME) with all the infrastructure this implies, and also facilitates a social convergence process between social organizations' press people and between independent and alternative medias. ...................................................................................................................................................... The challenge of the media strategy is to break down the corporate medias disinformation circle, and to promote a collective effort to maximize our abilities to reach public opinion. To that effect, the strategy is putting forward two streams of action: ...................................................................................................................................................... I- Build the conditions in Cancún for the convergence and positioning of independent medias, therefore facilitating a real, first-hand and alternative coverage of events. ...................................................................................................................................................... II- Spin in corporate mass medias through coordinated press work in Cancún, the social agenda of movements and organisations, and the meaning of their protests and alternative proposals. ...................................................................................................................................................... Any support, through funding or donated equipments, will be appreciated. Thank you!
